This DIY takes hardly any time or effort, the most time spent is waiting for paint to dry. I LOVE the look of these dipped vases (also found here and here), but wasn’t a fan of the price tag. As soon as I saw these glass vases at Target that were the exact same shape and size without the “dip” I knew a DIY could be done! This project came in at under $25 versus the $130+ vases you can buy already dipped!
Materials:
- Glass vase (or can use any shape or size, I also dipped this size as well)
- Spray Paint & Primer (I used a matte white, but you can use any color! A pale blue or gray would also be super pretty!)
- Painter’s Tape
- Tape measure or ruler
- Utensil to mark glass (I used a chalk marker because I had one, but anything that will rub off of the glass, like a regular marker should work)
- Plastic bag (can use a trash or grocery bag)
Instructions:
- Make sure your vase is clean and any labels are removed.
- Measure 3 inches from the bottom all the way around the vase, (or any height depending on how thick you want the “dip”) making small markings as you go.
- Line up the painter’s tape with the markings, if you want to do a 3 inch dip make sure you line the tape up ABOVE the markings not below, so that all 3 inches below gets painted.
- Go around the tape a second time to make sure there aren’t any gaps or bubbles along the bottom to ensure a clean line- to be honest, I should have done a more thorough job on this step.
- Cover the top portion of the vase with your plastic bag and tape it off on top of the other layer of tape so no paint can get in.
- Find a safe & ventilated space to spray paint, flip the vase on its top & spray! I did 3 light coats to make sure there wasn’t any drips, but everything was fully covered. Follow any directions on your can of spray paint for wait and re-coat timing.
- Once the vase is dry, carefully and slowly remove the bag & tape to ensure a clean line.
- If there are some spots that aren’t super straight, use an xacto knife or box cutter to clean up the line.
- Add some fresh or faux florals & enjoy! (I filled mine with two bunches of these faux tulips)
