We celebrated Wyatt’s first Fourth in Crested Butte, Colorado. The day started in the city, where we surprised my mom with the birthday present of more Wyatt time, something she can never get enough of. All of my family was in Denver for my cousin’s wedding, but my mom thought (because we told her) that Tim, Wyatt and I were flying back to NYC on the 4th while she and my dad were headed to Crested Butte with family. We kept telling her she had to soak up Wyatt because he was leaving soon, (really getting her going) and then the morning of the 4th, which is also her birthday, Wyatt gave her a card that said he was coming with her to Crested Butte. She was confused, then speechless, then so excited. I love doing surprises for my mom because she has the best reactions (unlike Tim…I surprised him at college one year and he froze and said, “What are you doing here?”). We surprised my mom when we told her we were pregnant with Wyatt and she had a similar reaction but x100 + crying (‘tears’ “My baby is having a babyyyyyyy!!! ‘tears’). Surprises are my favorite presents to give- I like them too much, I’m always trying to do fun ones, but it gives Tim anxiety keeping secrets…he is also the family wag so he’s mostly just worried that he’ll spill the beans and I’ll get mad.
Anyways, she was thrilled with her gift… she (and my dad) are obsessed with Wyatt, it’s so much fun for me to watch them fawn over him every second, be so impressed by all of his “tricks,” and profess their love for him constantly. (And the offers to babysit when we’re visiting so I can go do something or just have a break are an added bonus!) If I don’t Snapchat them Wyatt pics and videos at least a few times during the day, I hear about it that night, they literally can’t get enough. That’s been a really fun part of parenthood that I never really thought about before I had Wyatt, just seeing my own parents with him as grandparents and the amount of love they give him. It gives me a glimpse of what they were like as parents to me when I was a baby. Now I’m basically a second class citizen…all they care about is Wyatt! Just kidding- but not really.
So with a packed car and full hearts we made the trek to Crested Butte…four hours in the car with an infant isn’t ideal, but Wyatt is an expert traveler at this point (see a few of my car-travel tips here), so he was a champ, and Grandma kept him occupied basically the whole ride anyways! Once we settled into our condo on the mountain, we headed to the ski base area to check out the sights, and wrapped up with evening with a BBQ and fireworks! Happy Birthday mom, and Happy 4th!
