Tim and I love our coffee…and as new parents, let’s be honest, it’s basically a necessity. Especially when we travel. Wyatt isn’t a great sleeper on the road (our prince really likes the privacy of his own room, the comfort of his dream crib, and his normal schedule) so when it comes to coffee, we don’t fool around. Wyatt had us up at 5:30 am today and we were out on the dock with our coffee by 6…vacation is hard. (Although this early morning fog is pretty awesome right!? My family has been coming to this lake in Minnesota for over 40 years, and Wyatt’s been loving his first time!)
At home, we like to make our own cold brew with the Toddy System. It makes a concentrate that really gets the caffeine straight to your blood, jk but not really- we usually aim to brew it for 24 hours and it makes a mean batch. Cold brew is much less acidic than hot coffee, and we also don’t have to worry about holding Wyatt while we sip because if it happens to spill it won’t burn him (not to mention at home I like to drink it out of a straw to help keep my teeth white…does that help? I don’t even know, I tell myself it does.) Cold brew is also super simple to make, you can use any kind of coffee (we brew with this, or this when we’re feeling fancy), and lasts a long time! The full instructions we use are here.
When we travel, we’re always on the hunt for coffee shops that have cold brew or at least really good hot coffee (Tim’s a bit of a coffee snob though and really prefers cold brew over everything. His obsession really took off when we were living in SF and he started going to Blue Bottle constantly.) On some trips that are long enough we end up taking our cold brew system because it’s pretty lightweight and packable, especially if we’re bringing a checked bag or are traveling by car. We just put some clothes in the plastic brewer so it keeps its shape and we save room, pack the filter and plug, and then put the actual cold brew into some container once we make it at our destination (pitcher, big water bottle…whatever we can find.)
The convenience factor is top notch, and not having to brew coffee every morning (because if stays fresh for weeks and will last us 4-7 days, depending on how tired we are) or having to go out to buy coffee is awesome- because getting out of the house these days is more of a production and let’s be real, vaca is for staying in your pjs for as long as possible 🙂
